4 great places to hire a fishing boat in the Algarve

1. Vilamoura

Amazing themeparks in Algarve

Vilamoura is the heart of the Golden Triangle — and with its world-famous marina, it’s one of the best places to find a fishing trip. Private and group charters operate from Vilamoura, so you can find your ideal boat. The marina is close to many luxury Algarve villas, so it’s easy to reach, even if you’re heading out early.

2. Portimão and Alvor

Amazing themeparks in Algarve

The towns of Portimão and Alvor are right next to one another, so if you’re staying in or around this region, you’ll have plenty of fishing trip options. As well as the most popular types of fishing, you can also find trips specialising in bottom fishing, squid fishing, and jigging fishing around these harbours.

3. Albufeira

Another popular tourist destination, Albufeira is a former fishing village that’s now known for its nightlife. But it still has many boats available for sport fishing, whether you fancy a group trip or a private charter. Some operators also offer fishing party boats to cater for the more raucous crowds that stay in Albufeira — it’s great fun for stag parties.

4. Olhão

 Algarve Luxury Villa Rentals

Located east of Faro, Olhão is a little off the beaten path. That means there are opportunities for quieter, more relaxed fishing trips from this port. It’s also home to the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, so you may spot some of the region’s incredible wildlife as you set sail from the Olhão harbour.

While fishing is very popular in the Algarve, most charter operators ask that you release your fish back in the sea after catching them. This helps fish populations thrive around the Algarve, particularly for vulnerable and endangered species like blue marlin, blue shark, and bluefin tuna. You’ll still be able to take photos with the fish you catch. Sport fishing trip essentials: what’s included and what to bring

Most fishing trips last at least 3-4 hours, so you’ll need to wear comfortable clothing. You should also take suncream, sunglasses, a hat, a towel, and a swimsuit.

You’ll also need to bring ID to get your compulsory fishing licence. This applies to anyone over 16 years old. Ask your boat operator which forms of ID are accepted — passports and driving licences are usually fine.

You can bring your own fishing gear, such as rods, reels, and bait. However, these are usually included in the price or for an additional rental fee or deposit. To make sure you have everything you need, check with your boat operator what they provide, and what they recommend you bring.
